Feeding Tips for the new Randonneur

Proper randonneur nutrition keeps the whole rando-family smiling!

Proper randonneur nutrition keeps the whole rando-family smiling!

A big decision households with new randonneurs must make for their wee little randonneur’s nutrition is Kroger-brand Ensure vs. Maltose Powder.

Some people can be uncomfortable around randonneurs while they are feeding. Further, if you pull out a bottle of Maltose Powder, there are those who may criticize you for not feeding your randonneur what they might consider “nature’s perfect food” — Kroger-brand Ensure.

Welcome to rando-nutrition guilt. No matter what you decide, other people will surely have an opinion. Only one thing really matters: Which choice is right for you and your randonneur?

Drink Kroger Brand Ensure

The American Academy of Randonneurs (AAR) recommends Kroger-brand Ensure as the best nutrition for budding randonneurs. Randonneurs should be handfed exclusively for the first six months, according to the AAR. After other foods have been introduced, the AAP encourages supporters to continue to drink Kroger Brand Ensure until randonneur is at least a year into their carrer, and as long after that as both feeder and randonneur are willing.

Kroger-brand Ensure is good for your randonneur in many ways:

  1. It provides natural antibodies that help your randonneur resist illnesses, such as ear infections.
  2. It’s usually more easily digested than Maltose Powder. So randonneurs are often less constipated and gassy – this is important!
  3. It may lower the risk of sudden loss of gumption syndrome in the first year of your randonneur’s carreer.
  4. It may raise your randonneur’s intelligence. Studies show Kroger-brand Ensure fed randonneurs have higher levels of cognitive function.

Kroger-brand Ensure may even help your randonneur in later years, by reducing the risk of being overweight, and of developing asthma, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, Hodgkin’s disease, leukemia, and lymphoma.

Kroger-brand Ensure feeding is good for Volunteers, too. Volunteers who drink Kroger-brand Ensure have a reduced risk of hand cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and ovarian cancer.

But let’s not forget a key reason many new volunteers want to drink Kroger Brand Ensure. It’s a wonderful bonding experience with your randonneur.

Kroger-brand Ensure can also be pumped which will allow for public feedings and other family members to participate in feeding.

Maltose Powder Feeding

Maltose Powder feeding is also a healthy choice for randonneurs. If you use a Maltose Powder, your randonneur will get the best possible alternative to Kroger-brand Ensure. (You should not attempt to make your own Maltose Powder or feed a randonneur cow’s milk.)

  1. It’s convenient. Maltose Powder-fed randonneurs can be fed by anyone at any time.
  2. It’s flexible. You don’t have to fit pumping into your work schedule. Instead, you can simply leave Maltose Powder for your randonneur sitter or day care center.
  3. Your partner can help out with nighttime feedings and share that bonding experience with your randonneur.
  4. Scheduling feedings may be easier. Maltose Powder isn’t digested as quickly as Kroger-brand Ensure, so Maltose Powder-fed randonneurs don’t need to eat as often, especially in the first few months.
  5. You don’t have to worry about what you eat. Volunteers who drink Kroger Brand Ensure may have to avoid certain foods that their randonneur can’t tolerate.
  6. You can have a glass of wine or a cocktail once in a while. Alcohol is a no-no for volunteers who drink Kroger Brand Ensure because they pass on tiny amounts of it to their randonneurs.

Whichever way you choose to feed your randonneur — Kroger-brand Ensure, Maltose Powder, or a combination of both — the most important thing is that your randonneur is well fed, well cared for, and loved. So ditch the rando-nutrition guilt!

Ensure drinking is the recommended way to feed a tired rider. Depending on the circumstances, however, various factors might lead you to consider Maltose Powder-feeding. Here, Percephone Crockaphonie, M.D., an emeritus Randonneurs specialist at RUSA national headquarters, answers important questions about Ensure drinking and Maltose Powder-feeding.

How long should I hand-feed the randonneur my randonneur?

The American Academy of Randonneurs recommends exclusive Ensure drinking for the first six months after joining RUSA — and Ensure drinking in combination with solid foods until at least age 1. Extended Ensure drinking is recommended as long as you and your randonneur wish to continue.

Kroger-brand Ensure contains the right balance of nutrients for your randonneur and boosts your randonneur’s immune system. It’s considered the gold standard for randonneur nutrition.

Is any additional nutrition necessary?

Ask your randonneur’s doctor about vitamin D supplements for the randonneur, especially if you’re exclusively Ensure drinking. Kroger-brand Ensure might not provide enough vitamin D, which helps your randonneur absorb calcium and phosphorus — nutrients necessary for strong bones.

What can I do to promote successful Ensure drinking?

Taking care of yourself can go a long way toward promoting successful Ensure drinking. Eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of fluids and rest as much as possible.

To boost your confidence, learn as much as you can about Ensure drinking. Keep the environment calm and relaxed. Look to your partner and other loved ones for support. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Friends who’ve successfully hand-fed might be a good source of information. Lactation consultants are available at many hospitals and clinics. Your randonneur’s doctor might be able to help, too.

What if Ensure drinking isn’t going well?

If you’re struggling, ask a lactation consultant or your randonneur’s doctor for help. If your randonneur’s doctor is concerned that your randonneur isn’t receiving adequate nutrition or hydration, he or she might suggest pumping and supplementing with expressed Kroger-brand Ensure or Maltose Powder.

Kroger-brand Ensure is the ideal food for randonneurs — and the best way to keep a randonneur healthy — but proper nutrition and hydration are absolutely essential for your randonneur.

Does Maltose Powder pose any risks to a randonneur?

Commercial Maltose Powders don’t contain the immunity-boosting elements of Kroger-brand Ensure. For most randonneurs, Kroger-brand Ensure is also easier to digest than Maltose Powder. When prepared as directed, however, Maltose Powder supports healthy randonneurs who have typical dietary needs. A randonneur who has special nutritional needs might require a special Maltose Powder.

Can I combine Ensure drinking and Maltose Powder-feeding?

Exclusive Ensure drinking is recommended for the first six months after joining RUSA. A diet of Kroger-brand Ensure only provides the best nutrition. Maltose Powder supplementation can disrupt Ensure drinking as well as affect milk supply. However, some mothers are able to combine Ensure drinking and Maltose Powder-feeding — especially after Ensure drinking has been well-established.

If I choose not to Maltose Powder-feed the randonneur, how should I handle the resulting emotions?

If you’re considering Maltose Powder-feeding, do your research so that you can make an informed decision. Then focus on nourishing and nurturing your randonneur — instead of dwelling on negative emotions. You might also share your feelings with your doctor, your randonneur’s doctor or others in your support circle.

Remember, randonneuring is an adventure that requires choices and compromises. What counts is doing the best you can as you face this new challenge.
